I first tried climbing at a summer camp, when my friend forced me to try it. I immediately fell in love with climbing and joined my local gym’s climbing team as soon as I got home! I became obsessed with climbing pretty quickly, and started competing 6 months later. More recently, I helped found Federación Puertorriqueña de Escalada, a national climbing federation for Puerto Rico. I will be representing Puerto Rico on the World Cup circuit and, hopefully, at the Olympics in 2024 and/or 2028.
I love that you need so many skills to be successful in climbing.
It’s not enough just to be strong or to have good technique.
You have to be powerful, flexible, mentally tough, and most importantly you have to be able to think outside the box.
My first international win at the Youth Pan American Championships in bouldering was a surreal experience for me.
After the first two boulders in finals, I was in last place but I was able to turn my mindset around and get the only tops on the last two boulders securing the win.
Making a comeback like that was an experience that I will never forget.
There’s always something to learn in climbing, so don’t be afraid to try new things, play on the wall, or fall. It’s all part of the process!
